Fleece to Floor Rugs

Hand spun & woven floor rug using sheep fleece with coloured mill lap waste.

This rug shown started it’s life on the back of a Hebridean sheep called Captain Jack who lives in Back on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. 

Once shorn, the wool fleece is cleaned (skirted), hand spun on a traditional spinning wheel, before being washed and dried ready for the weaving process.  It takes about 4kg of spun yarn to complete a rug of this size.  It is then woven on a large  Norwegian styled floor loom and finished by hand tying it and trimming the surfaces.

The variation in base colour of the rug is dictated by each sheep’s fleece.  Each sheep breed has different characteristics and variations in colour. Colours ranging from creamy white to mixed greys, solid or mottled brown to almost black, an almost blue to coffee shade, the variations are as many as sheep.  The addition of splashes of merino colour can be selected to complement your space. Each fleece is personally selected and sourced from friends farms based in Britain.

This is a deposit only to secure your rug.  There is about a 4-5 week turnaround  period while the yarn is spun, washed, dried, woven and finished.

Once your deposit is made Anne will be in touch to chat about your rug with you before she starts working on it
